What is Hamas? Who founded it and why?

Hamas is a Palestinian Islamist political organization and militant group that has a significant presence in the Gaza Strip. It was founded in 1987 during the First Intifada, an uprising against Israeli occupation. Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, the European Union, and several other countries. The group's founding charter calls for the destruction of Israel and the establishment of an Islamic state in the area that is now Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.

Hamas operates social programs and provides various services in Gaza, which has helped it gain popularity among some Palestinians. However, it has also been involved in numerous conflicts with Israel, including rocket attacks and other forms of violence. Its military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, has been responsible for carrying out many of these attacks. Hamas has engaged in several conflicts with Israel, including the 2006 and 2014 Gaza wars.

Hamas was founded by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and other Palestinian activists in 1987. Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, a prominent figure in Palestinian Islamist circles, played a crucial role in the early development of the organization. He was born in 1937 in what is now the State of Israel, but later moved to Gaza. Yassin was a highly influential religious leader and gained a significant following among Palestinians.

Hamas was initially established as an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist organization with a presence in many countries. The group's founding charter emphasized its commitment to the destruction of the State of Israel and the establishment of an Islamic state in the region.

Sheikh Ahmed Yassin led the organization until his assassination by the Israeli military in 2004. His death led to widespread demonstrations and increased support for Hamas in the Palestinian territories. Since then, the leadership of Hamas has passed through various figures, including Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashal, who have played significant roles in shaping the organization's strategies and policies over the years.

Internationally, there have been efforts to negotiate ceasefires and peace agreements between Israel and Hamas, but these have often been fragile and prone to collapse. The situation remains complex and sensitive, with ongoing political and humanitarian concerns for the people living in the region.
