Mohammed Shami and Other Athletes Honored with Arjuna Awards

In a proud ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan, President Droupadi Murmu awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award to standout athletes for their remarkable performances in 2023. Among the recipients were cricket sensation Mohammed Shami, archers Ojas Pravin Deotale and Aditi Gopichand Swami, and wrestler Antim Panghal.

Mohammed Shami, the star Indian pacer, emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the ICC Cricket World Cup, securing 24 scalps and setting new records. In an exclusive statement before the ceremony, Shami expressed his joy, emphasizing the significance of the Arjuna Award in his career.

"I am happy that I have been nominated for this award. It is like a dream for me to get this award because my whole life I have seen many people receiving this award," said Shami.

Para-archer Sheetal Devi Aditi Swami, known for her outstanding performance in last year's Para Asian Games, also received the prestigious award. Sheetal's remarkable victory in the women's singles compound open event showcased her determination and skill.

Other notable awardees include Ojas Pravin Deotale, who clinched two gold medals in men's compound archery, and U20 World Champion wrestler Antim Panghal. The list of Arjuna Awardees spans various sports, highlighting the diverse talents that India celebrates.

The Arjuna Award, India's second-highest athletic honor, is bestowed upon athletes for their exceptional performance over the previous four years, coupled with qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and discipline.

The ceremony reflects the nation's acknowledgment of these athletes' dedication and excellence, making them inspiring figures in the realm of Indian sports.
